Witchcraft has an animistic world view. It believes that all creations in the universe have a life force. This life force is like a web draped over the universe, the threads of which can be manipulated to bring about a change in the pattern of nature itself. The individuals that can bring about such changes are called witches or wiccans. The wiccans, through study and practise can effect the desired changes by following certain rituals. By working closely with nature and understanding the larger truth of the cosmos they can create changes in the physical, emotional or the spiritual world. The rituals that help realise the wiccans intentions are known as spell casting.
The basic law of witchcraft states that what you will do, will be done unto you three times over, be it good or evil. The novice witch needs to realise that the intentions behind the spell should be clear and every word and visualisation needs to be precise and meditated upon. It should be performed after learning about Wicca in depth either through time tested books, covens or an experienced witch.
If you understand the Witches way of life and are ready to cast your spells then remember to bide by the Wiccan laws and do it in love and harm no one. There are a number of different ways in which one can cast a spell. It could be simple and consist of the most basic tools and a few rhymed lines while others can be much more complex.
Before you begin the actual casting you need to accumulate certain ritual tools.
A novice should start with his/her own book of shadows and write down all the spells, rituals or spiritual experiences and results. This will help you to better understand the nuances of spell craft.
Next an appropriate ritual space should be found and cleansed. The various charms and objects needed for the particular spell should be gathered. The colour of the candles, the types of Incense, Essences, herbs, oils, would depend on the spell. Incense sticks and herbs like sage are burnt to cleanse the circle. Salt may be sprinkled and amulets used for protection. An Athame is used to cast the circle and crystals can improve the strength of the spell.
The first step towards casting is a ritual cleansing bath. Soft music can be played in the background to relax the mind. Casting spells is meant to be a joyous experience. You can dance your way to your Alter and begin by casting the circle. This is the centre of power where you will invoke various deities to aid you in your task. The various elements like earth, water, fire, air and spirit are also invoked by facing their respective directions. Â Chant or sing your intention in a rhymed verse. Visualise your goal and feel it being accomplished. Increase your chant or dance to raise the energy and direct that energy towards your goal. Focus and bask in the thrill of what you want coming true. Thank the element, deities and nature for aiding you and protecting you. Close the circle and celebrate the end with a ritual feast and a glass of wine. Your spell is cast.
